1,000 arrested in 'wanted' blitz

1,000 people were arrested over 48 hours in London during a massive police operation to round up wanted suspects, Scotland Yard has said. Hundreds of officers made more than 1,800 "visits" across the capital over two days during efforts to hunt down people wanted for questioning or who had failed to appear in court. The operation - codenamed Big Wing - focused on suspects who failed to attend court charged with grievous bodily harm, robbery, burglary, domestic violence or had breached prison licence terms. Police said the final total of arrests was 1,065 over the two days - including one man held when five officers were attacked by a dog in east London. The operation, which began in the early hours of Thursday, follows a similar string of swoops in December which saw around 450 wanted people being arrested. On an average day, about 80 wanted suspects are arrested in the capital. Assistant Commissioner Simon Byrne said: "Catching wanted offenders is now a key priority for the MPS, and this week's major action is the latest in a series of big operations which are targeting criminals in London as part of our total war on crime. "The people picked up in the last few days, weeks and months have either failed to appear at court, jumped bail or are wanted by the police for other crimes. Therefore, it's critical they are relentlessly pursued so they do not escape justice. "We will not give up in the search to find people who flout the law and we'll use every means available to catch them. This is why we have arrested hundreds and hundreds of wanted people in the last few months."
